Functionality specialist W.L. Gore & Associates is known for manufacturing breathable, windproof, and waterproof membranes for motorcycle gloves. The Challenge

For motorcyclists, the hands are undoubtedly the body parts under the greatest strain. They steer, operate the clutch, and throttle all at the same time. Good motorcycle gloves must therefore meet a wide range of requirements: They must protect against injuries and joint damage, remain breathable even in summer, be waterproof in the rain, and offer a high level of comfort. Until now, whenever a glove met all these criteria, there was always one problem: the rider’s ability to control the motorcycle was severely compromised. With GORE-TEX Grip Technology, Gore has, for the first time, created a solution that also rises to this challenge.

The Innovation

Many waterproof motorcycle gloves consist of four layers: a durable outer garment, an insulating layer, the waterproof layer, and a lining. With GORE-TEX Grip technology, an innovative layered construction reduces the number of layers needed by two. Furthermore, for the first time, all layers are permanently laminated together using a special 3-D process. The new thermal bonding process developed by Gore does not restrict breathability thanks to its mesh structure. This achieves an unprecedented level of fit, comfort, and durability. The motorcyclist feels as though they are wearing a single-layer glove, making it easy to grasp even the smallest objects. This ensures excellent grip and quick response—in other words, perfect control over the bike—in any situation.
