Climatic control membranes

All climatic membranes have the same basic function: they protect the body from outside moisture, keep out the wind, and transport body sweat from inside to outside. Garments fi tted with membranes help protect you from bad weather, and are usually designed with a set of other comfort features.

All three of these membranes are made from polyurethane or polyester. They use principles derived from higher chemistry and physics to transport water vapour molecules through the membrane to the outside. The poreless, homogeneous structure keeps the wind out and thus prevents unwanted cooling of the body. To keep the water out, every seam is welded together with a special hot-sealed band so that no water can penetrate from the outside.

Depending on the brand, membranes are made from different basic fi bres, and usually fi tted inside jackets and trousers as a loose foil, or liner. Special materials and tightly-regulated processing guidelines make the membranes extremely durable, stretchable and tear-proof.
